Following the passing of Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) presidential candidate, archived interviews she gave during her lifetime have begun circulating online. One widely shared clip features her interview with Zionfelix TV, where she discussed her health and candidacy.
In the interview, Akua Donkor confidently affirmed her ability to handle presidential responsibilities despite her health and age. She reassured viewers, “I have faced health challenges for the past 10 years, but I’m still here. Even if I pass away, my running mate will continue the mission.” The interview, published on October 12, 2024, shows her unwavering spirit and commitment.
Akua Donkor, aged 72, passed away on October 28, 2024, at Accra’s Ridge Hospital. Her career, which began as an Assemblywoman for Hemang in the Ashanti Region, was marked by her unique personality and humor, endearing her to many Ghanaians. Known for her resilience, she ran for the presidency multiple times, first as an independent candidate in 2012 and later with GFP, meeting the Electoral Commission’s requirements to appear in the 2020 election.
In her 2024 campaign, just 39 days before the general election, she promised ambitious policies such as free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services, free education, and better pay for farmers. Recently, she named Roman Fada—manager of highlife musician Daddy Lumba and Atinka FM broadcaster—as her running mate, signaling a strategic move for her campaign.
In light of her passing, Roman Fada shared with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM that the GFP has yet to make a final decision on their participation in the upcoming 2024 election.
