On Sunday, Nigerian police officers reportedly fired shots and used tear gas to forcibly disperse #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Tollgate, now known as the #EndSARS bus stop, in Lagos State.
The protesters had gathered to commemorate the victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS movement, which called for an end to police brutality in Nigeria.
Eyewitnesses reported that the peaceful demonstration was disrupted when law enforcement officers began shooting into the air and releasing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Many demonstrators fled for safety, and at least two individuals were arrested during the incident.
A source confirmed the arrests to SaharaReporters, although the identities of the detained protesters have not yet been disclosed.
The Nigerian police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the arrests or the use of force at the memorial.
The #EndSARS bus stop has become a symbolic location for protests, as it marks the site of the infamous Lekki Tollgate shooting on October 20, 2020, when security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters.
