Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited has shut down its 560MW power plant due to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) inability to clear its outstanding $259 million debt. The power plant shutdown, announced on October 16, 2024, comes after ECG failed to meet its overdue payment obligations, leaving Sunon Asogli struggling to maintain operations.
According to the company’s statement, the debt, excluding fuel, has grown by 23% between January and September 2024, with only 22.6% of invoices settled through the Cash Waterfall Mechanism. Despite Sunon Asogli’s efforts, including a decision not to invoice ECG for idle capacity, the financial burden has become unsustainable.
Sunon Asogli expressed regret for the disruption this will cause to the national power supply but emphasized that they had no choice. The company also urged the Ministry of Finance to step in and resolve the issue, allowing the power plant to resume operations swiftly.
