The Speaker of Parliament has announced that Members of Parliament are to reconvene on Thursday, November 7. This session will begin at 10 a.m. at the Accra International Conference Centre, a temporary venue while the main parliamentary chamber undergoes renovations.
The recall, detailed in a notice issued on Thursday, October 31, is in line with Article 112 (3) of Ghana’s Constitution and Standing Orders 5 and 53, empowering the Speaker to summon Parliament when necessary for matters of public interest.
Though the specific agenda for the session remains undisclosed, the urgency of the recall indicates that critical national issues may be addressed. Members are expected to arrive promptly in Accra to discuss these pressing concerns.
This reconvening follows Speaker Alban Bagbin’s adjournment of parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, October 22, amid heightened tensions. The session had seen a clash between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over caucus majority status.
Further, Speaker Bagbin cited a recent communication from the Supreme Court directing him to suspend his ruling on the vacancy of four parliamentary seats. Subsequently, on Wednesday, October 30, the Supreme Court upheld its directive by dismissing an appeal filed by the Speaker.
