Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has confirmed that Parliament will reconvene in early November following a formal request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary caucus. This recall aims to address legislative matters after parliamentary sessions were adjourned indefinitely due to a majority dispute.
The suspension of parliamentary activities stemmed from a dispute over the majority position, escalating further when the Speaker declared four seats vacant, which led to an impasse. Both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have urged for clarity to ensure a functioning legislature.
During a courtesy visit by the Council of State, Speaker Bagbin reaffirmed his commitment to resolving these critical issues through constitutional and democratic channels. He emphasized that his office, in collaboration with parliamentary leadership, is dedicated to restoring order and resuming proceedings.
The Speaker assured that a November reconvening would allow Parliament to address pressing issues and implement procedural reforms to avoid future conflicts. Bagbin highlighted that resuming Parliament is essential for tackling the majority dispute and strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions, reaffirming his neutrality in upholding Ghana’s democratic values.
The Council of State welcomed these reassurances, expressing appreciation for Speaker Bagbin’s dedication to democratic principles and legislative continuity.
