In response to a press conference held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament on Sunday, Alexander Afenyo-Markin of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stated that there will be no confrontation in Parliament on Tuesday. Instead, if the NDC proceeds with its plans, the NPP will walk out.
Afenyo-Markin clarified that the NPP has sought the Supreme Court’s interpretation regarding the current parliamentary dispute. According to him, the Supreme Court has issued a directive, and as far as the NPP is concerned, a bailiff from the court will be serving Parliament with the ruling on Monday.
Speaking in a radio interview with Accra-based Peace FM, monitored by Graphic Online on Monday morning [October 21, 2024], Afenyo-Markin said if the NDC insists on switching seats and proceeding with legislative activities when Parliament reconvenes on Tuesday, including plans to amend laws such as the abolition of the Communication Tax (e-levy), the NPP will peacefully walk out.
This statement comes amid heightened public speculation over a potential showdown in Parliament, following the NDC’s indication of switching to the Majority side after the Speaker’s ruling last Thursday. The NDC also announced intentions to appoint a new Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
