On Tuesday, millions of Americans will cast their votes in the closely contested 2024 presidential election, with Democratic candidate Kamala Harris challenging Republican rival Donald Trump.

Of the 230 million eligible voters in the U.S., around 160 million are registered, though nearly half of the states allow same-day registration. Notably, citizens in North Dakota can vote without prior registration. More than 70 million voters have already submitted their ballots, either by mail or through early in-person voting.

In addition to choosing the next president, voters will elect 34 U.S. senators and all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Gubernatorial elections will also occur in 11 states and two territories, Puerto Rico and American Samoa.

With six time zones across the U.S., polls will open as early as 5 a.m. ET (10:00 GMT) and close at 1 a.m. ET (06:00 GMT) on Wednesday, creating a sweeping election day as Americans make their voices heard in this critical national decision.
