Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has voiced disappointment following the withdrawal of eight crucial players from Ghana’s squad ahead of their pivotal 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Speaking after the team’s initial training session at Accra Sports Stadium on November 11, 2024, Mensah acknowledged the setback but remained optimistic, emphasizing each player’s right to make personal decisions.
“It’s a big loss, but we have a team prepared to step up. When one is unavailable, another is ready to take their place,” said the Auxerre defender, underscoring the team’s resolve to push forward.
Notable withdrawals due to injury include Antoine Semenyo, Tariq Lamptey, Inaki Williams, Osman Ibrahim, Jereme Opoku, Alexander Djiku, and Jonas Adjetey, while Joseph Paintsil opted out for personal reasons. These absences impact Ghana’s AFCON ambitions as they aim for victory in their upcoming matches—against Angola on November 15 in Luanda and Niger on November 18 in Accra.
Currently ranked third in Group F with two points, Ghana must secure wins and hope for Sudan, in second place with seven points, to lose ground. Angola leads the group with 12 points.
Preparations have begun with eight players in Accra, including Mohammed Kudus, Gideon Mensah, and Joseph Wollacott, with other key players joining soon. Coach Otto Addo has scheduled additional training before the team departs for Luanda. Despite the player shortage, the Black Stars remain focused on delivering a competitive performance in the qualifiers.
