Ghanaian Boxing Legend Clement Ike Quartey Passes away at 86 in the UK

Renowned Ghanaian boxing legend Clement Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey has died at age 86 in the United Kingdom on Saturday, November 2, 2024, as confirmed by the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF). Details surrounding his passing remain undisclosed.

 

Quartey’s professional boxing career spanned from 1988 to 2006, boasting an impressive record of 37 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw, with 31 of those wins achieved via knockout. Known for his powerful jabs, Quartey held the WBA welterweight title from 1994 to 1998 and competed in the welterweight, light-welterweight, and light-middleweight divisions.

 

A highlight of his career was his 1999 fight against American boxing star Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas. Beyond his professional accolades, Quartey won a silver medal in the men’s Light Welterweight category at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, adding to his legacy in Ghanaian and global boxing history.
