Electoral Commission Disqualifies Ghana Freedom Party’s Flagbearer Over Legal Irregularities

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) nominee for the December 2024 presidential election, citing multiple legal irregularities in his nomination form.

EC Chair Jean Mensa announced the decision on Tuesday, November 12, explaining that despite giving the GFP a chance to address the errors, certain violations remained unresolved, leading to Kubi’s disqualification. The GFP was initially granted a 10-day extension to nominate a new flagbearer after the sudden passing of its founding leader, Akua Donkor, on October 15.

According to Jean Mensa, while the GFP corrected some discrepancies, other elements in Kubi’s nomination form were deemed “illegitimate” under Ghana’s electoral laws. The EC reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent and lawful election process, underscoring its strict adherence to electoral standards regardless of attempts to amend the flagged issues.
