The ongoing conflict in Bawku has claimed two additional lives, raising the death toll to 19 amid rising violence and unrest.

The recent victims were attacked while traveling by truck from Bawku, ambushed by unidentified assailants who fired upon the vehicle, leading to fatal injuries. One of the deceased was identified as a Mamprusi, and the other as a Togolese national who had come to Bawku to care for his ill father, who also passed away during their stay. The two were transporting the father’s body back to Togo when they encountered the deadly ambush.

Rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disputes and ethnic tensions, the Bawku conflict has intensified over the years, with recent escalations attributed to the reappearance of a rival chief, sparking renewed clashes between ethnic factions.

Despite a strong security presence, violence persists, and this recent incident underscores the ongoing risks facing residents in the region.
