Bawku Conflict: Death Toll Reaches 21 After One More Killed

Bawku

A tragic escalation of violence in Bawku has claimed another life as a Bolga-Bawku driver, identified as Maadi, was killed and his vehicle set ablaze on Saturday, November 2. This incident raises the recent death toll to 21 and has triggered renewed gunfire in the area.

The conflict, previously subdued, intensified with the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who fled Bawku in February 2023 after an arrest warrant was issued due to a contested chieftaincy installation in Nalerigu. On October 17, 2024, the Kumasi High Court nullified the warrant, allowing Abagre to return on October 26.

Following his arrival, the longstanding chieftaincy feud reignited, resulting in gunfire that left two people dead and numerous others injured, with heightened fears of further violence across the community.

In response, a curfew from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm has been enforced by security forces, who remain on high alert as tensions persist and efforts continue to restore order in Bawku.
