President Nana Akufo-Addo is set to inaugurate the newly completed Flower Pot Interchange on November 19, 2024, as confirmed by Eugene Arhin, Communications Director at the Presidency.
Project Overview
Designed to ease North-South travel and enhance connectivity, the Flower Pot Interchange complements the existing motorway underpass. The project now includes an 800-meter flyover, beginning at Palace Mall on Spintex Road and connecting to Boundary Road in East Legon. Additional enhancements include motorway ramps, an upgraded roundabout at Flowerpot, and improved access through the old East Legon tunnel.
Key Project Objectives
- Enhanced Commuter Experience: Improving access between North and South sections along the Accra-Tema Motorway.
- Congestion Reduction: Alleviating traffic at the Spintex Flowerpot Intersection.
- Direct Connectivity: Offering a direct route from Accra East (Burma Camp area) to East Legon.
- Traffic Relief: Reducing congestion around alternate motorway access points.
- Reliable Access Route: Providing uninterrupted connectivity between Burma Camp and the motorway.
Project Scope
- Dual Carriageway: 802 meters of dual carriageway on the viaduct with asphalt surfacing.
- New Ramps: 140-meter ramp from Shiashie to the viaduct towards Airport Hills and an 80-meter ramp from the viaduct to the motorway towards Tema.
- New Road Access: Through the old tunnel in East Legon, plus a 200-meter road connecting Giffard Road Interchange to Cantonments.
- Redesigned Roundabout: Upgrades to the Flowerpot roundabout and its approaches.
- Pedestrian Infrastructure: Walkways along the flyover.
- Road Fixtures: Installation of streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals.
