Afenyo-Markin Urges Speaker Bagbin to Respect Supreme Court’s Stay of Execution Ruling

Alexander-Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to honor the Supreme Court’s ruling, which stayed the execution of his decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

The Supreme Court ordered Speaker Bagbin to suspend his ruling, directing Parliament to allow the four MPs—whose seats were declared vacant—to continue representing their constituencies and performing their duties.

Speaking to the media, Afenyo-Markin expressed his satisfaction with the court’s decision, emphasizing the need to uphold the law.

“The court has ruled and instructed the necessary processes for final determination. We expect all parties, including the Right Honorable Speaker, to respect the law. Our focus is on upholding the legal process,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The stay of execution was filed by New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, seeking the Court’s intervention to halt Speaker Bagbin’s ruling, which would have affected three NPP members and one National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP.

The application was filed ex parte, allowing the Court to proceed without requiring immediate input from Speaker Bagbin or other parliamentary authorities.

Afenyo-Markin also urged NPP members to remain focused on their 2024 election campaign, warning them not to be distracted by opposition tactics.

“Let’s work hard. President Akufo-Addo has achieved much, and while we’re not perfect, we have an election to win. If we secure a massive victory, the NDC’s actions will be irrelevant,” he added.

The case was presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, along with Justices Mariama Owusu, Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Ernest Yao Gaewu, and Yaw Darko Asare, who delivered the ruling to stay the Speaker’s decision.
